Featured Snippets & URL DeDuplification, with a few updates from the original.

  1. 22nd January 2020 – Google De-duplicates Featured Snippets
  2. This does not include Carousels, Answers, People Also ask, Bubbles etc.
  3. Google says they see “true” Featured Snippets as Organic
  4. Google counts FS as “position 1”
  5. Google has (is?) removing any URL from the other SERP positions if it is identical to the FS URL
  6. It is possible to have a FS and a page listing -so long as they go to different URLs
  7. Duplicated URLs being pushed to the top of SERP pg 2 was a bug, (that has been fixed // won’t happen anymore).
  8. DeDuplication of Right-column FS was a bug
  9. Right side DeDuplication should have stopped/reverted
  10. 28th February 2020, Google plans to move all “true” Featured Snippets in the Right column to the main column (they will deduplicated also)
  11. If you don’t want a Featured Snippet, use: the code below to reduce the size of the snippet and stop Google triggering the FS.

  12. DON’T use <meta name="googlebot" content="nosnippet"> that may delete your meta description – check out this test from Claire Carlile.
  13. If you lose a Featured Snippet, you should regain a normal listing, appearing in one of the higher positions on page 1 SERP
  14. If a FS shows an image from a different web site, that URL will not be deduplicated. (source)
