Google Testing Thumbnails in Desktop SERPs

I was not able to replicate it. Try winterreisen on desktop. We are used to seeing these on mobile but it looks kinda new on desktop. ( perhaps there were older tests on desktops a while back)

According to the user who saw this, there doesn’t seem to be any correlation on how Google is picking these images. In no case did G use the OG image. Sometimes header image, sometimes just some seemingly random picture from the site.
