tl;dr Marketing #30: Instant Apps on Android, Quora self-serve Ad platform
Hi folks,
We have a massive issue this week, a lot of new announcement at Google I/O 2017.
We are starting to see “Instant Apps” on Android in the wild, Google announced a free Google BigQuery plan, Bing introduced a Business Bot, Quora launched a self-serve Ad platform, etc

IT would appear Google is running a test in the local knowledge panel for business listings. There is a new section called “highlights” that shows various aspects of the business like “Good for Kids” “Casual” etc. It would appear they are sourced from user reviews.
If you search for hotels on mobile you can see the pricing trends graph, you have the option to look at the weekly or monthly data. Could not replicate from Austalia, so it could be limited to the US for now.
At Google’s I/O developer conference, CEO Sundar Pichai announced a new technology called Google Lens. During a demo, Google showed off how you could point your camera at something and Lens tells you what it is. An example was a photo of a business’s storefront — and Google Lens could pull up the name, rating and other business listing information in a card that appeared over the photo.
Business owners often want to be notified when customers add photos to their listing. Google has launched a new feature where owners will get a new notification for photos.
John Muller has started a Google Group where webmasters running JS powered sites can communicate with him on their concerns and issues.
It would appear that users are staring to see Instant Apps in the wild.
Google has added a free storage tier — so you can try BigQuery with your own data at no cost. BigQuery has two free tiers: one for storage (10GB) and one for analysis 1TB/month. So, if you keep your usage under those limits, you’ll never get charged.
In a Google, I/O session called “Building Apps for the Google Assistant,” company speakers outlined the three primary ways that developers can get their Assistant apps in front of users.
  1. Verbal app invocation (explicit or implicit)
  2. Assistant Directory
  3. Weblinks
There are no downloads or apps to install per se. All Assistant apps are available to the user at any time. They can be explicitly invoked by asking for them by name: “Let me talk/speak to OpenTable” (among other phrases that can be used). They might also be presented in response to a request or question without a specific app mention (implicit invocation). An example would be, “I want to fly to New York next week.”
In an earlier issue we mentioned this and now Google has confirmed it at Google I/O 2017.
Most of the SERP Trackers are showing a lot of fluctuations in the last few days. Ddi you notice it with any of your sites?  •  Share
John Mueller of Google said in a video hangout this week that Google may automatically nofollow widget links for you.
Bing Business Bot is a virtual employee for your business that can answer most of your customers’ questions on your behalf and helps efficiently manage customer communication.
The bot works 24x7 on Bing, Skype and can be embedded on your website. It can automatically create a bot from the data in Bing Places. It is supported only for restaurants at this stage.
People come to Quora to ask questions and read insightful answers. This includes people looking for reliable information about your company, products, competitors and industry. Advertise on Quora to influence people during the consideration phase of their purchase process.
Purchases on Google Now Available for Beta Request via Merchant Center. As of right now, Purchases on Google requests are open only for US-based retailers but you can register your interest from other countries like Australia, France, UK, India, etc. To sign up for the beta you can fill this form
Google is running a new style of AdWords ad that includes an expandable section which will then display an added carousel on the bottom of the ad. This format is similar to some carousels we have seen used in AdWords ads, except these ones cannot be viewed without expanding the section first.

Ad Rank determines where an ad appears on the page and is based on a calculation of max CPC, expected CTR, ad relevance, landing page experience and the expected impact of ad extensions and other ad formats. Ads need to meet Ad Rank thresholds, or minimums, in order to show on the first page of results. Typically, thresholds are higher to show at the top of the page above the organic results than they are for ads to show at the bottom of the page. In addition to position, thresholds can also vary depending on factors such as country and device.
Google is rolling out changes to AdWords Ad Rank thresholds
  1. Ad Rank thresholds account for meaning and context of the query
  2. Bids may be weighted more heavily in the Ad Rank calculation depending on query meaning
With new integrations for Google Optimize and Google Surveys 360 with AdWords, you’ll be able to test landing pages and gain insights about your ads more efficiently.
Google wants Attribution to be a home for evaluating marketing campaigns. By creating a tight loop between strategy, ad spend and feedback, Google aims to make the tool attractive to marketers that feel last-click models don’t sufficiently explain customer behaviour. For now, Google Attribution is stuck in beta, but the company says that advertisers should expect a deeper roll out in the near future.
Conversion Import in AdWords helps you understand how your online ads affect your offline sales and other valuable actions by letting you upload your offline conversions into AdWords.
Starting today, you can schedule these uploads to save time and reduce errors. AdWords will automatically upload offline conversions from clicks and calls into individual or manager accounts on a daily or weekly basis.
At Google’s Marketing Next conference in San Francisco, the company announced Unique Reach, a new measurement tool that captures the number of times the same person has seen an ad. Google says that Unique Reach reporting is available today in AdWords. DoubleClick support will be coming later this year.
For search advertisers, Google is launching a beta to serve AMP-enabled landing pages on mobile from Search ads. After users click a search ad from mobile, the ad will direct to the AMP landing page that can serve up much faster than standard landing pages. When creating ads in AdWords, advertisers will be able to designate an AMP-enabled landing page at the ad level. Google says early testing has shown improved user behaviour and conversion outcomes.
On the Google Display Network, Google will automatically convert display ads to AMP. Google has found AMP ads can load up to five seconds faster than standard display ad builds.
Google is making changes to analytics that will give you an even more accurate understanding of how people are engaging with your business across AMP and non-AMP pages of your website. You do not have to make any changes but you might notice the following while these changes are rolling out:
  • User and session counts will go down over time.
  •  New Users may rise temporarily.
  •  time on site, page views per session, and bounce rate will rise consistent with sessions, with AMP and non-AMP pageviews no longer being treated as multiple sessions.
Social Media
Archived photos will show up in their own private folder, which only you can access by tapping on the new clock-looking icon on the top right of your profile.
From there, you can choose to return it to your profile, share it privately on Messenger or WhatsApp, or get rid of it once and for all.
Now you can see what’s happening around you and find stories related to your interests.
You’ll see a new story ring at the top of Explore filled with stories happening near you. These stories come from people who have used location stickers on their stories. You can also search for any location around the world, and you’ll see a story ring for that place at the top of the location page.
  • Live Chat with Friend will allow you to enter into a private conversation with your buddies while you are watching a live feed together
  • Live With allows you to FaceTime with your friends in a public live event.
Both features are available on mobile in certain countries for now.
Twitter has found its own way to participate in the growing chatbot trend. The company announced today a new feature for advertisers, which allows businesses on Twitter to promote ads designed to pull consumers into personalised experiences within Direct Messaging – including interactions with chatbots.
The Direct Message Card is currently available in limited beta to Twitter advertisers. Interested in using it? Contact your Twitter representative today for more information.
Snapchat is adding the ability to create custom stories limited to specific friends, or to direct contacts and their friends within a geofenced area. These new custom stories otherwise operate just like regular Snapchat Stories, but will disappear entirely if no one within the group adds any updates for 24 hours.
I am skipping tips this time around because this is a massive issue.
psst: I was hope that if you all like the issue you might consider sharing it with your mates in the digital marketing industry or in any Facebook or Slack groups you are a part of. 🤜🤛
